India 503/9 declared; Sri Lanka 8/2 at stumps on Day 2
India strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Monday, riding on a composed unbeaten century from Dhruv Jurel before their bowlers struck twice in the final phase of the day. India declared at 503/9, leaving Sri Lanka 495 runs behind at 8/2 when bad light brought an early end to play.
The second day was interrupted by rain, but India still managed to turn an already dominant position into one that now looks extremely difficult for Sri Lanka to escape from.
Jurel Completes a Superb Century
Resuming his innings in the nervous nineties, Dhruv Jurel showed remarkable patience as Sri Lanka crowded the bat with close fielders. The wicketkeeper-batter eventually reached his second Test century, finishing unbeaten on 115 off 177 balls, with nine fours and two sixes.
Jurel's hundred was particularly important because India were looking to stretch their advantage while also leaving themselves enough time to bowl at Sri Lanka. Once he crossed three figures, he immediately switched gears, launching two sixes as India moved beyond the 500-run mark.
His century also placed him in an exclusive Indian record. Jurel became only the second Indian batter to score a Test century at No. 7 or lower in Sri Lanka, after Hardik Pandya.
Adding another layer to the occasion, Jurel celebrated his century by revealing a tattoo carrying the words "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan", reflecting his tribute to India's soldiers and farmers.
Pant Provides the Counterattack
Before Jurel took complete control, Rishabh Pant supplied the aggression India needed.
Pant, who had been under an injury cloud after the previous day's events, was declared fit to bat and returned to the middle. He immediately made his intentions clear, taking on the Sri Lankan short-ball strategy.
One of his standout moments came when he pulled a bouncer over fine leg for a huge 95-metre six, which reportedly struck and damaged a solar panel. He then attacked Keshara Nuwantha and later Prabath Jayasuriya with successive boundaries.
Pant eventually made 63, while his partnership with Jurel became one of the defining passages of India's innings. The pair added 112 runs for the seventh wicket, ensuring Sri Lanka could not build any sustained pressure after the lunch interval.
Padikkal’s Century Sets the Foundation
India's dominance was not built only on Day 2.
Devdutt Padikkal had already produced a major contribution on the opening day, scoring 117, his second consecutive Test century. His innings provided the backbone for India's massive total and followed an impressive hundred in the first Test.
With Padikkal's century, alongside half-centuries from Shubman Gill (50) and Rishabh Pant (63), India were able to maintain a relentless scoring rate despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
At the end of Day 1, India were already sitting comfortably at 300/5, with Sri Lanka facing the challenge of breaking through a deep Indian batting lineup.
Rain Delays India — But Cannot Save Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's best chance was arguably the weather.
Rain interrupted play for more than two hours, forcing an early tea and significantly reducing the amount of time available for India's declaration and subsequent bowling attack. Jurel was stranded on 95 when the interruption arrived, leaving him five runs short of his century.
When play resumed, however, Jurel completed his hundred and India quickly accelerated. Mohammed Siraj was dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya, but Jurel and Prasidh Krishna added the final runs before captain Shubman Gill called his batters back.
India declared at 503/9 after 138 overs.
Sri Lanka Collapse Under Immediate Pressure
India had only a small window to bowl before bad light, but they made it count.
Prasidh Krishna struck first, getting one to straighten after pitching and inducing an outside edge from Lahiru Udara, with Yashasvi Jaiswal completing an excellent catch at third slip.
Manav Suthar then added another blow, trapping Sri Lanka's nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw.
Suddenly, Sri Lanka were 8/2 after only three overs, with India holding a commanding 495-run first-innings lead.
Debutant Kamil Mishara was unbeaten on five at stumps, with Sri Lanka already staring at the enormous task of surviving India's attack and somehow staying in the contest.
Sri Lanka Facing an Uphill Battle
Sri Lanka entered the second Test already under pressure after losing the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs. Their batting options were further weakened by the absence of Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal, while Pathum Nissanka was also unavailable.
India, meanwhile, have received contributions throughout the batting order and now have their bowlers operating with a huge cushion.

With three days still remaining, India are firmly in the driver's seat. Sri Lanka will need a monumental batting effort simply to avoid following on, while India have every reason to believe they can push for another comprehensive victory and strengthen their position in the series.
