Saransh Jain Makes Test Debut as India Opt to Bat First Against Sri Lanka in Colombo

India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test | Colombo | August 23, 2026

India have won the toss and elected to bat first against Sri Lanka in the second and final Test of the series at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo. The visitors enter the contest with a 1-0 lead after registering a convincing 165-run victory in the opening Test in Galle.

The biggest talking point at the toss was India's decision to hand a Test debut to Saransh Jain, who comes into the XI in place of Kuldeep Yadav. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have handed Test debuts to Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara as they look to fight back on home soil.

Saransh Jain Gets His India Cap

The long-awaited debut of Saransh Jain has finally arrived.

The 33-year-old Madhya Pradesh all-rounder has earned his first Test cap after establishing himself through consistent performances in domestic cricket. Jain is a spin-bowling all-rounder and has been brought into the side as India make a forced change to their combination.

Jain replaces Kuldeep Yadav, who has not fully recovered from a viral illness. The BCCI confirmed that Kuldeep was unavailable for selection for the second Test, although he remains available as a concussion substitute if required.

The change gives India another spin option alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar, particularly with the SSC surface expected to offer increasing assistance to spin as the Test progresses.

India Look to Finish the Series 2-0

India arrive in Colombo with plenty of confidence after their dominant performance in Galle.

They won the first Test by 165 runs, giving Shubman Gill's side a 1-0 advantage in the two-match series. India will now be looking to complete a series sweep, while Sri Lanka must win in Colombo to level the series.

The first Test also produced several encouraging performances for India. Devdutt Padikkal was one of the standout performers, while Manav Suthar made a major impact with the ball.

With the series already in their hands, India have the opportunity to build further momentum in the World Test Championship cycle.

Sri Lanka Turn to Youth

Sri Lanka have been forced into changes of their own.

Opening batter Kamil Mishara has been handed his Test debut and is expected to open alongside Lahiru Udara. The 25-year-old left-hander comes into the side after strong recent white-ball performances.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara also receives his first Test appearance. He was involved in the previous Test as a concussion substitute after Dinesh Chandimal suffered a concussion, but Colombo marks his official Test debut.

Sri Lanka's batting has been hit by several absences. Kusal Mendis is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Dinesh Chandimal is unavailable following the concussion he suffered during the first Test. Pathum Nissanka is also recovering from wrist surgery.

That makes the contributions of the new players particularly important for the hosts.

Why India Chose to Bat First

Shubman Gill had little hesitation in choosing to bat after winning the toss.

The conditions in Colombo were bright at the start of play, although rain remains a possibility during the Test. The combination of heat, humidity and a surface expected to become drier could make batting first an attractive option.

The SSC pitch is also known for bringing spin into the game as a Test progresses, making India's decision to put runs on the board first a potentially important one.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva indicated that he would also have preferred to bat first, but the hosts will hope their bowlers can exploit any early movement from the surface.

A Test of Character for Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka, this is effectively a must-win encounter.

A defeat would hand India a 2-0 series victory, while a win would allow the hosts to draw the series and finish the contest on level terms.

The pressure is therefore firmly on Dhananjaya de Silva and his young side. With several experienced batters unavailable, Sri Lanka will need their new faces to step up against an Indian team that already has the advantage.

For India, meanwhile, the focus will be on maintaining the intensity that produced the Galle victory while giving their new players an opportunity to make an impact.

The Saransh Jain Story

Perhaps the most fascinating subplot of the Colombo Test is Jain's debut.

At 33, his journey to the Indian Test side has been considerably longer than that of many modern international cricketers. His selection is a reminder of the importance of domestic cricket and consistent performances over several seasons.

Now, with his India cap finally in hand, Jain has the opportunity to turn a long-awaited debut into the beginning of a new chapter.

India have already won the first battle by taking the toss.

The bigger question now is whether Sri Lanka can respond — or whether India will complete a 2-0 series sweep in Colombo.
