BCCI Issues Statement on Pant’s Injury Amid Fourth Test Drama
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally broken its silence on Rishabh Pant’s injury, offering clarity on his role for the remainder of the Manchester Test. The star wicket-keeper batter suffered a concerning foot injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, leaving fans and teammates alike in worry.
The Incident: Pant’s Painful Exit
Pant was in visible agony after attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes. The shot went awry, and he immediately clutched his foot. Medical staff rushed in as he lay on the ground, and he had to be stretchered off the field. A significant swelling on his toe sparked fears of a serious injury.
BCCI’s Official Update
As Day 2 commenced, the BCCI released a formal statement addressing Pant’s status:
“Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,” read the statement.
Will Pant Bat Again?
While Pant’s keeping duties have been handed over to Dhruv Jurel, he is still available to bat—if needed. However, considering the intensity of his injury, it remains to be seen whether India will risk sending him out unless absolutely necessary.
Fracture Reported, Series Likely Over for Pant
Although the BCCI hasn’t confirmed the full extent of the injury, several media outlets are reporting that Pant has suffered a toe fracture. If these reports are accurate, Pant is unlikely to feature in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, starting July 30. Recovery is expected to take at least six weeks.
Jurel, who had also replaced Pant behind the stumps in the third Test due to a finger injury, is now the frontrunner to replace him in the playing XI for the next match. However, an official squad update from the BCCI is still awaited.
Pant’s Stellar Form This Series
Pant has been in sublime form with the bat throughout this series. In just seven innings, he has racked up 462 runs at a phenomenal average of 77. His absence would be a massive blow for Team India as they aim to clinch the series in England.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops and the BCCI releases more information on Pant’s recovery and India's squad plans for The Oval Test.
