The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a third consecutive term in Haryana with a resounding win in the 2024 Assembly elections, delivering a significant blow to the Congress party. This marks the BJP’s best-ever performance in the state’s Assembly polls, securing a clear majority of 48 out of 90 Assembly seats. While the BJP celebrates its victory, the Congress managed to secure 37 seats, falling short of expectations. Additionally, three independent candidates emerged victorious, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) secured just two seats. This result is being considered a major setback for Congress, which has been grappling with internal divisions within the state. Party leaders have expressed surprise, calling the outcome unexpected and different from the ground reality.
Interestingly, the vote share between the BJP and Congress was incredibly close, with the BJP garnering 39.94% of the votes and Congress following closely at 39.09%. Despite this narrow margin, the BJP’s seat count gave it a clear edge.
Nayab Singh Saini, the current Chief Minister, is set to continue in his role after winning his Ladwa seat with a total of 16,054 votes. Under his leadership, the BJP will form the next government in Haryana. Despite this victory, it is worth noting that eight of the BJP’s ministers and the Speaker lost their seats in this election.
Addressing the victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a sharp dig at the Congress, stating, "Wherever BJP forms a government, people choose them for a long time and re-elect them. Meanwhile, Congress has failed to retain its position. I can't think of the last time they managed to secure a second term in any state in India since 2013. In some states, they have been out of power for over 40 years. Once people decided to remove them, they never brought them back to power. They've put up a 'No Entry' board for Congress."
PM Modi further criticized Congress, accusing them of spreading hate and ignoring the issues of the poor. "People are watching how they (Congress) are spreading hate in society. Especially, those who are living a five-star life and were born with a silver spoon—how would they understand the problems of the poor? Congress did not give food, houses, or safety to the dalits and poor. Even after coming to power, they won’t let any dalit or adivasi become a Prime Minister. They hate them. They can’t see them succeed. They refused to give equal participation to dalits and adivasis in Haryana. They want to take their reservation and give it to their vote bank," Modi remarked.
He also alleged that Congress was trying to weaken the country by dividing communities. "They were trying to do that in Haryana. They want to weaken India by spreading hate among communities, like misleading farmers, but the farmers showed them the way and didn’t support them," he added.
With the final Election Commission update at 10:00 PM confirming the BJP’s 48-seat win, it has become clear that the party will remain in power. Congress’s 37-seat showing continues its streak of electoral defeats in Haryana, making this its third consecutive loss in the state.
As Haryana’s political landscape looks forward to the next phase under Nayab Singh Saini’s leadership, the BJP will be strategizing its future moves, while the Congress contemplates its next steps after another disappointing result in the Assembly elections.
