Devara Part 1 Review: Jr NTR Shines in an Explosive Action Drama

The long-awaited cinematic spectacle, Devara: Part 1, hit theatres on September 27, 2024. Directed by Koratala Siva, the film stars Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Set along a dramatic coastal backdrop, this high-octane action drama tells the story of Devara, a brave warrior, and his son Vara, who must continue his father's legacy to protect their people. The film has already garnered Rs 60 crore in India through advance bookings, making it one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Plot Overview:

The story is set in the final decades of the 20th century, focusing on a fierce rivalry between Devara and Bhaira. After Devara’s death, his son Vara takes on the mantle to defend his community. While the film boasts relentless action and sweeping visuals, it struggles with genuine emotional depth, making it more suited for fans who relish epic scale over storytelling innovation.

The film centers around four villages nestled in a mountain overlooking shark-infested seas, where violence is ingrained in the community. These villagers worship their weapons and are descendants of warriors who once fought against British colonizers. Now, they act as pirates, working for arms dealers. The film portrays a raid by the Coast Guards, introducing both the protagonist and antagonist. Devara leads a fearless group, while Bhaira rises as a powerful villain, setting the stage for a classic good-versus-evil showdown.

Jr NTR’s Dual Role:

Jr NTR plays both Devara, the fearless warrior, and his son Vara, who is more subdued and avoids conflict. Saif Ali Khan takes on the role of the villain, Bhaira, although his character’s depth is somewhat restricted by the screenplay, limiting his scope to fully explore the role. The first half of the film effectively builds tension between the two.

Introduction of the Crime Plot:

The film begins in 1996, when a senior Bombay police officer leads a team to the south to apprehend a crime lord who threatens the upcoming Cricket World Cup. This team stumbles upon the legend of Devara, narrated by Singappa (played by Prakash Raj). Devara had vowed to protect the sea and his people from criminals, disappearing into the ocean in his final stand against Bhaira.

Female Characters in the Story:

The women in Devara are sidelined. Devara’s mother (Zarina Wahab) and wife (Shruti Marathe) are portrayed as passive, with little control over the events around them. When Janhvi Kapoor’s character, the daughter of Devara’s old ally, enters the story midway through the second half, she too has a limited role. Her romantic interest in Vara is a small subplot that adds little to the main narrative, despite a few light-hearted scenes.

Technological and Visual Elements:

The editing by A. Sreekar Prasad is one of the film’s strongest aspects, making the three-hour runtime feel surprisingly smooth and coherent. Unlike other South Indian blockbusters like KGF and Pushpa, Devara does not suffer from excessive plot twists or convoluted storytelling. However, the visual effects, particularly the underwater scenes and ocean shots, fall short of expectations. Though not as poor as Adipurush, they lack the polish one would expect from such a high-budget production.

Music and Action:

Anirudh Ravichander's background score is dynamic, rising and falling with the action sequences. However, the songs themselves fail to leave a lasting impression. The action sequences, while relentless, occasionally rely too heavily on CGI, which detracts from their impact.

Final Thoughts on Devara Part 1:

In summary, Devara: Part 1 is a mixed bag. While the film delivers epic action, solid performances (especially from Jr NTR), and impressive editing, it falls short in areas like visual effects and character development, particularly for its female cast. Fans of large-scale action and melodrama will likely enjoy the film, but others might find it lacking in depth and originality. Nonetheless, the groundwork has been laid for an explosive Part 2, which will hopefully address the shortcomings and deliver a more well-rounded conclusion.

Looking Ahead to Part 2:

As of now, there is little indication of what Devara: Part 2 will hold. One can only hope that the next chapter expands on the underdeveloped characters and improves on the visual effects, while maintaining the momentum and action that fans have come to expect. With its promising start, Devara has the potential to become yet another iconic South Indian franchise.
