West Bengal Panchayat Election Results: TMC Dominates, BJP Distant Second

The results of the West Bengal panchayat election 2023, which was considered a crucial test for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have been declared. Despite incidents of violence during the election, the TMC has emerged as the dominant force, securing a significant lead over its rivals. Here are the top 10 updates on the West Bengal panchayat election results:

1. TMC's sweeping victory: The TMC is set to sweep the rural polls, securing an unassailable lead in the seats declared so far. Out of the 23,344 gram panchayat seats declared, the TMC has won 16,330 seats, establishing its stronghold. The BJP secured 3,790 seats, emerging as a distant second.

4. Repolling and violence: The State Election Commission ordered repolling in 696 booths across 19 districts due to reports of violence and booth-capturing during the initial voting on July 8. The repolling was conducted on July 10, with a significant voter turnout of 69.85 percent.

5. Toll of political violence: The panchayat elections witnessed a significant toll of political violence, with the death toll rising to 42 since the announcement of the polls on June 8. Allegations of vote tampering led to the order of repolling in affected booths in most districts of Bengal.

6. BJP's criticism and fact-finding committee: The BJP criticized the TMC government for "state-sponsored" violence and labeled Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as "ruthless." The party claimed that at least 45 people have died in the clashes. The BJP nominated a four-member fact-finding committee, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Dr. Satyapal Singh, to assess the violence-affected areas.

7. Shelter for displaced people: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that 133 people from West Bengal sought shelter in Assam due to fears related to the election violence. The state government provided them with shelter in relief camps and assured them of humanitarian aid during crises.

8. Incidents of violence: On July 8, at least 19 people were killed and several others injured amidst allegations of booth capturing, rigging, and other unlawful activities. The number of casualties on the voting day was higher than in the 2018 panchayat elections.

9. Smooth repolling process: Repolling took place on July 10 under tight security, with the deployment of central forces personnel in each booth. Election officers worked overtime to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted voting process.

10. Governor's intervention: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the South 24 Parganas district, including Bhangar and Canning, to assess the situation. The governor also met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apprise him of the violence that occurred in West Bengal.

Conclusion:

The West Bengal panchayat election results have established the TMC's dominance, with a significant lead over its rivals. Despite incidents of violence and allegations of malpractice, the election process proceeded, and the results have been declared. The outcome of these elections is likely to have implications for the political landscape in West Bengal leading up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
