PSG will be aiming to end the 2022-23 season on a high note as they face Clermont Foot at the Parc des Princes in their final match. Despite not having a stellar season, PSG will celebrate their record eleventh Ligue 1 title after this game. It will also be Lionel Messi's last match in a PSG shirt before his anticipated departure on a free transfer. A decision on Messi's future is expected to be made next week.
Messi's two-year tenure at Parc des Princes has been relatively unfruitful, with only a World Cup victory, a seventh Ballon d'Or, and some notable individual performances to show for. Nonetheless, Christophe Galtier's side secured the top spot with a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg last week, allowing them to approach the final day of the Ligue 1 season without any pressure. They were considered strong favorites to win the French top-flight due to their superior goal difference.
Galtier is widely expected to be relieved of his managerial duties as PSG continues its pursuit of European glory. He will be looking to sign off with a significant victory over Clermont.
On the other hand, Clermont has had an incredible season, performing above expectations. They currently sit in eighth place in the table, just six points away from a European spot in the lower-tier competitions. This is a remarkable achievement considering they were promoted just two years ago and narrowly avoided relegation last season.
However, Clermont has little left to play for and is unlikely to put up much of a fight in this match. PSG won the reverse fixture 5-0 and will be aiming for a similarly convincing score line.
Confirmed Lineups:
Paris Saint-Germain XI (3-4-1-2): Donnarumma; Danilo, Ramos, Bitshiabu; Zaïre-Emery, Vitinha, Verratti, Hakimi; Messi; Ekitike, Mbappe
Clermont Foot XI (3-4-2-1): Diaw; Seidu, Wieteska, Caufriez; Zeffane, Gonalons, Gastien, Borges; Cham, Rashani; Kyei
Upcoming Fixtures for PSG:
This is PSG's final fixture of the 2022-23 season. The club has already begun planning for the next season, with expectations of a summer clearout of underperforming stars. With Messi and Sergio Ramos set to depart PSG for free, and the uncertain futures of Neymar and Marco Verratti, the French giants are looking to rebuild with young and ambitious talents in the upcoming transfer window.
