A Tragic Loss: Remembering "Sidhu Moosewala"
In a solemn gathering at Jawahar Ke village in Mansa district, prayers were organized on Sunday to mark the first death anniversary of Sidhu Moosewala, the renowned Punjabi singer-turned-politician. Tragically, Moosewala was shot dead by a group of assailants in the same village on May 29 the previous year. The residents of Jawahar Ke village came together to perform a Sukhmani Sahib path, a religious recitation, in honor of Moosewala's memory. Emotions ran high as his mother, Charan Kaur, arrived at the village to attend the prayers and pay her respects. Overwhelmed with grief, she knelt down and touched the ground where her beloved son was fatally shot. She then proceeded to the prayer site, where she expressed her gratitude to the villagers for organizing the event.
Gurjit Singh, a resident of the village, displayed his deep devotion by donating a piece of land near the spot of Moosewala's tragic demise. Plans are underway to erect a statue of the late singer and establish a memorial on this land. Speaking about the commemoration, Gurjit Singh emphasized the village's unwavering love for Moosewala and the profound sadness felt by everyone, regardless of age. He lamented the unfortunate incident that claimed the life of their beloved "son" within their village boundaries. The presence of Moosewala's mother only heightened the emotional atmosphere, as she tearfully connected with the place her son had lost his life.
To honor Sidhu Moosewala's memory, the villagers not only conducted the Sukhmani Sahib path but also organized a langar (community kitchen) and chabeel (sweet water service). Furthermore, Gurjit Singh mentioned that they arrange a weekly tea langar as an ongoing tribute to the late singer. The villagers' commitment to keeping his memory alive is evident through their heartfelt actions. However, it is important to note that the community has never sought or collected money in Moosewala's name. All their endeavors are self-funded, and they kindly request people not to contribute any monetary donations if approached under the guise of supporting Moosewala's legacy.
